This May we are offering a free course for anyone wanting to learn some basic online journalism skills.

It will particularly suit anyone who works for an organisation that has no specialist communication staff. If you are in a situation where you have to write website content, or create email newsletters and have no skills, then this is the course for you.

In this course you will learn:

  • How people use and read on the web.
  • How people use and read emails.
  • The basics of news values.
  • How to write a good headline
  • How to write a good summary
  • How to structure a longer story
  • Tips for writing on Facebook and Twitter.

Course requirement

This is a workshop and you will be asked to do online writing exercises from your laptop.

Please bring a fully charged wifi-enabled laptop. 

Your tutor

Your tutor is Tony Horrocks. Tony created the UK's first online writing skill courses back in the late '90s, in collaboration with the National Council for the Training of Journalists.

He has 30 years experience working for and with public sector organisations and trades union
