Cleaning data for CiviCRM

Getting data into the right shape and cleaning it up is one of most important - and occasionally painstaking - tasks to do before you can move it into a CRM.

What is dirty data?

You might be in an organisation where everyone keeps the same sort of data in different spreadsheets, for example addresses. Or you might keep one sort of data in one spreadsheet - volunteers names and addresses for example - and a timetable for the same volunteers in another.

Ivan Waineright's Pyramid

I’ve had a look at Ivan Waineright’s free guide What Small Charities Need to Know About CRM Systems the other day, and a pretty good - and recommended - read it was. It's good to see he gives CiviCRM a proper mention.

What struck me was Ivan’s Pyramid of Priority (reproduced in the illustration) - and grey column labeled “Change Management”. This put me in mind of our own experiences implementing CRMs in small organizations. And that is the over-arching need for leadership.

Campaign Monitor email templates

Gettng your emails to look good on different devices can be a pain. Here's how we do it.

CiviMail - part of CiviCRM - is great for sending out email newsletters that people can subscribe to. It keeps your data in one place, and you can look at who gets it, what they click on and get a really good picture of user engagement.

The downside is that creating the emails is finicky. You need to get a responsive template in place and then you need to use it and edit it for every email.  It takes a great deal of time and skill to create a great looking email.
